Anti Corrosion Coatings
Arc Energy Resources
is firmly established as one of the UK’s leading anti corrosion
coating specialists.
Anti corrosion coatings are a widely used and effective method
of protecting the internal surfaces of pipe systems, plant and
equipment from corrosion using corrosion resistant alloys.
Typical applications using anti corrosion coatings include:
• flow loops
• flow spools
• oil and gas pipelines
• pigging systems
• pumps, valves and flanges
• risers
• sub sea connectors
• sub sea environments
• sub sea jumpers
• sub sea manifolds
• sub sea wellhead valves and associated equipment
Where standard, off-the-shelf carbon steel components such as
valves, pumps, pipes, flanges or fittings are used, anti corrosion
coatings are certainly the most versatile option, providing the
assurance of a heavy-duty metallurgically-bonded protective layer
that will not be undermined or dislodged in service.
Of the main anti corrosion coating processes, automated GTAW
(TIG) is ideally suited to smaller components. It is also most
appropriate where subsequent machining will be required, for example
for the seal areas of valves and flanges.
GMAW (MIG), submerged arc and electroslag anti corrosion coating
processes are used where larger areas and thicker deposits are
required. Faster deposition rates mean these methods also offer
cost savings.
Even in systems that do not suffer anything worse than normal
aqueous attack and where pipes are internally protected by other
methods, it is well worth considering the application of anti
corrosion coatings to the system’s seal areas.
Anti corrosion coatings offer clear advantages to areas where
a directional change of flow takes place – for example a
bend or diversion point, or where the medium is physically propelled
by pumping or other means. Anti corrosion coating protection can
be applied specifically to these areas, eliminating the need to
produce the whole component from an expensive corrosion resistant
material.
The overwhelming advantage of an anti corrosion coating is its
versatility. Whatever the shape or size of the piping component
there is a process that can be applied and whatever the medium,
there is an alloy to counteract its corrosive or abrasive properties.
Arc Energy Resources is qualified by the internationally renowned
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Certification organisation after
its team of welding and quality engineers gained the ASME ‘U’
and ‘R’ stamp certificates of authorisation.
Although Arc Energy Resources has produced components for ASME
certified vessels for many years, recent changes in the regulations
mean that in future this highly specialised type of welding must
be carried out in the company’s ASME qualified workshop.
This has involved the company introducing a completely separate
ASME approved quality system to qualify for accreditation; and
means that materials purchasing, production routing and inspection
now have to be planned separately from other commercial work.
